I See Trouble Ahead

In 2013, after leading an organization-wide cost-neutral transformation and turnaround of the Hoosier Lottery, I founded CODEI. A longtime systems thinker passionate about connecting plans and resources to sustainable results, I believed I saw trouble ahead for just about every organization. As we were all heading into new demands brought on by the 4th industrial revolution, I saw organizations responding by chasing the never ending promises of more and more technology while also continuing to miss in their big and little swings at being "data-driven."  At the same time, I saw their customers, both B2C or B2B, becoming harder-to-find, overwhelmed with content and choice, and becoming less responsive to traditional sales and marketing strategies and tactics. As I had just led the Lottery through a cost-neutral, data-driven, customer-centric, digital-first transformation and turnaround, I thought I could help.

Not Yet Ready

Taking my message to the market via conference presentations and participation, publications and networking, it was clear that I was a bit too early. Many were beginning to recognize that current approaches and solutions were not sustainable, but they weren't yet ready to talk about what would be. They weren't ready to acknowledge that "data-driven" was less about data scientists and advanced tools and more about people and process across the organization. And also not yet ready to accept that being ready for the digital economy required far more work than advancing digital marketing competencies. Much of the market still wanted simple, easy and quick. My timing was off, but I knew it wasn't ever going to be simple, easy or quick to build organizations and ecosystems that looked, acted and valued differently.

An Illness Slows Progress

The market wasn't quite ready for what I wanted to talk about and as it turns out, I wasn't quite ready to talk about it either.  Instead of leaning all the way into the work of what I'd hoped would be leading in an emerging market, I was forced to allocate too many moments to finding my way through an autoimmune disorder to regain my health! I pulled back, but I didn't stop working with companies looking for transformation, new capabilities and growth and I didn't stop listening and learning as the market continued to move towards building for a digital economy.

Nearly 10 Years Later, Let's Get To Work

Now, nearly ten years later, it's finally time to get to work. For me and the market. I remain convinced of the work necessary and this time, I think most agree. Agree that sustainability in a digital economy requires an organization that is inspired by and responsive to the customer and their journey, informed, propelled and optimized by data and insights, prioritized and aligned across the work and its resources, and built by an engaged and participating workforce, partner and vendor ecosystem. It still isn't simple, easy or quick, but I believe I can see what needs to happen and am passionate about being part of making it real.
